I usually don’t rest easy with the idea of being #2. It goes against my nature, but in this case, it’s the right thing to do.
I remember the slogan Avis rent-a-car put to use for years, “We’re #2, so we try harder!” We try harder! became the battle cry for anyone who wasn’t #1.
Surrender is an old word. For many it’s a nasty word. I think most people have trouble with it. No one has to look up the definition of surrender, everyone knows what surrender means.
But, I pulled out my three-pound Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary and flipped the pages until my left index finger, teaming with my eyes, located surrender. Surrender n 1a: the action of yielding one’s person or giving up the possession of something into the power of another … the yielding of one’s person, forces, or possessions to another.
Then I looked up surrender in the thesaurus. Here are five words that are surrender synonyms: abandonment, capitulation, submission, relinquishment, white flag (okay six words). In other words give-in and give-up.
What does it mean to surrender to Jesus? It means all of these words
Then I wondered what the benefits were to surrendering to Jesus?
Right away I thought of this: no more fighting. And along with that I thought about what that meant? Peace instead of conflict. Order instead of chaos. I like the way that sounds and I’m planning to give it a try.
If you listen to the lyrics of Lecrae’s song the recurring phrase is “I could play the background” and this describes what I’m, now, willing to do: surrender.
What about you?
