I went to the place alone. I wanted to see for myself. It was an incredible story. and, of course, I didn’t believe it, either.
- The sun was up.
- The sky was clear.
- It was warm and quiet.
- Standing there I did hear the wind pass by.
Listen To The Rock
Then, I heard a voice. Distinct. Definite. Clear. I tried to locate where the voice came from … was it behind me? … beside me? … above me?
I looked all around. My heart pounded. My breath short and shallow. My eyes wide. Out loud I asked, “Who’s that? Who’s there?”
I scanned the area again.
- I scanned the east.
- I scanned the south.
- I scanned the west.
- I scanned the east
- I scanned everywhere in between.
- I didn’t see anyone. Nothing.
Then it came to me that whoever spoke was hiding. But where?
Standing there before the place I only saw a stone rolled away from the opening. As I stared at the stone, I heard the voice again.
It Takes Courage
“You shouldn’t be surprised, he said it could happen,” it said.
I jumped. Panicked. I shouted, “Come out, come out wherever you are!”
“I am talking to you because you don’t seem to be paying attention. You didn’t even listen to the children.”
“What?” What children? My mind flashed a memory of Moses talking to a bush … a memory of Balaam’s donkey. Is this like that?
“I know, I know you’re thinking I’m a simple rock. You’re suspicious and wondering why you should listen to me? It looks like I have no silver or gold, huh?”
“How … ” Am I talking to a rock?
“You walk by stones everyday never supposing they have a message for you?”
“For the love of … this is impossi …”
“It’s OK to think this is inconceivable. But it’s not OK for you to miss what just happened.”
“What just happened?”
“The most important event in creation’s history.”
“What does that you mean?” I could hardly imagine I was seriously having a conversation with a rock. I glanced over my shoulder. Have you ever had a conversation with a rock?
“The Maker and Lord of creation is alive!”
“Yeah … so? What does this mean?”
“Jesus has given you the opportunity to live.”
But It’s Time And Effort Well Invested
What if a rock spoke to you? I tried to imagine what might happen to me if a rock spoke to me, how would I react.
Jesus did say it could happen.
So, what if it did happen? What if God decided that a message was so crucial to your welfare that He would even try to get your attention by having a rock talk to you?
I think I’m smart enough to imagine I’d most likely pay attention to what the rock had to say.
Why would I do that? Because when it comes right down to it, I want what is best for me. Don’t you?
I mean, it may seem impossible that a rock would talk to me (or you), but if it it moved me closer to enjoying the best there is to enjoy, then I’m listening. How about you?
Forget the rock, are you listening to the impossible?
